History of Motown Monday
Matchmaker Band started performing at The Highball on Monday evenings on May 16, 2011. Within about a year, we saw a steady increase in regular attendees that eventually led to a line of people waiting to get in at the door.
At that time, South Austin was a beautiful melting pot of 'Austin weird'. The original Highball location had bowling lanes and was always full of the most eclectic group of people you could find anywhere in Austin.
The magic of Motown and classic R&B music is that it transcends all ages, demographics, and walks of life. The dance floor was packed with young and old, singing, dancing, and sweating it out together every Monday night. The love in the room was tangible and transformative.
We had several people move to Austin and become Motown Monday
regulars after they attended a Motown Monday on an Austin visit.
The original location closed due to construction and our Monday nights move to One-2-One Bar just down S. Lamar until The Highball eventually reopened in its current location, attached to Alamo Drafthouse. The original decor was saved and the bowling lanes were repurposed to be the dance floor and bar top as an homage to the original location.
Almost 13 years later, we faithfully continue this tradition every Monday night. Come and be a part of an Austin, TX tradition. We hope to see you soon!
